Terminology:

Direct thermal printing is great for light-medium durability of print. All shipping labels are direct thermal (as they are only needed for a short timeframe during shipping).

Thermal transfer printing is great for high durability of print. Product barcode labels tend to be printed using thermal transfer (long life span and different conditions).
